Janice Nicholls (regular guest on record rating panel) : Thank Your Lucky Stars was ABC's rival to Juke Box Jury, which had a celebrity jury; we were just teenagers. There were three of us. Me, from the Midlands, then Billy Butler from Liverpool — he's a Radio Merseyside DJ now and a girl called Janet from Southend. The first record was Speak To Me Pretty by Brenda Lee so I said, Oi'll give it foive.' It was just the way I spoke. But in those days they didn't go in for regional accents, it was all BBC English on television.
I thought, 'That's it; I won't be on again.' But they invited me back, and ended up doing three years. I got three guineas for each programme, which later rose to seven. I spent it all on clothes, records and shoes.
Five was the highest mark, so I didn't give it unless I really liked a record. I just gave my opinion. I met Gene Pitney on my first show. He was miming Town Without Pity ; they all mimed. He winked at me, and I never forgot it.
We'd have an American artist every week, until The Beatles came along. Thank Your Lucky Stars was their first networked TV performance. They were really nice.
I also saw Shirley Bassey, Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black and Lulu - she was the same age as me. Lots of the stars used to come to the canteen for egg and chips with the rest of us. I used to travel to the studios and back on the bus, and I'd be home by 1030 p.m. My mum and dad would always be waiting up for me.
