Hugh Hopper (roadie, Soft Machine) : We went to Tucson, then back to California - Sacramento and then down to L.A. We played Santa Barbara, Anaheim, UCLA and The Shrine, with Jimi attracting more and more attention from the press and public, and acting like a magnet for the L.A. musicians, who formed a line to jam with him. It became nearly impossible to set the equipment up properly ... Neville (Jimi's roadie) and I would stagger in from the truck carrying a speaker or a bass drum and have to carve our way through the Dave Crosbys, the Buddy Mileses and the Mickey Dolenzes before we could find a place to put it down. Such was their need to get their daily jam, they would be plugging in their guitars faster than we could set up.  (Source : Hugh Hopper, September 19, 1980, Melody Maker]

Steve Avis (fan) : I caught Hendrix with Soft Machine. That was a revolutionary change in music, the best show I ever saw. We were fourteen years old, went first through the door, and we got right in front of the stage. If he had reached down I could touch him. He had his Flying V leaning up against an amp. We could hear him talking to Noel and Mitch. The power went out early in the show and he said, 'Aw, shucks, just when it was gettin' good'.
