Johnny Black (diary entry) : Carol and I went to see Tom Petty, although the headline act was Nils Lofgren. I can’t deny that Lofgren is a thoroughly professional act, but I just didn’t like him. Gimmicks like somersaulting onto the stage via a trampoline while playing his guitar seem to me to be meaningless theatrics that simply distract from the music – which isn’t too interesting anyway. Mind you, maybe that’s why he needs to use these kinds of stunts.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, on the other hand, were pretty damn good despite some sound balance problems. Especially good was the stuff he played from the next album. Also, the band seemed like a bunch of real friends, which is always very satisfying.
