Johnny Black : My favourite fanzine, the wonderfully titled, Oscillate Wildly, once claimed that these chaps released the best record of 1984, and it was called The Greenfield Of France. It’s not on this CD but never fear, because there’s much here that’s worthy of investigation. Think of a politer Pogues, or a better-rehearsed Boothill Foot Tappers, and you’ve just about cracked it. The music is passionate contemporary folk – songs of North Sea oilfields, unemployment and hard times, set to chiming 12-string guitar melodies.
