Those Grammy-winning North Carolina bluegrass boys The Steep Canyon Rangers are back in the company of Hollywood superstar Steve Martin for the third time on record and, as expected, the combination offers as much banjo-plunking fun as ever. Generally I find it hard to get enthused about superstar thesps attempting to fatten their already overstuffed wallets by suckering unwary music-lovers, but Martin is something else. He’s no great vocalist but he can actually pick banjo well-enough to hold his own with the Rangers, and whimsy-infused cuts like Caroline and Nights In The Lab manage to subvert bluegrass norms enough to make it sound almost contemporary.
