Fact #155244

When:

Short story:

At The Speakeasy, London, England, UK, Europe, Jimi Hendrix jams with Sam Gopal's Dream.

Full article:

David Larcher (underground film-maker) : One night at The Speakeasy, Jimi got up to jam with Sam Gopal's Dream. Sam's guitarist, Mick Hutchinson, kept saying he was the fastest guitar player in Britain, and he was keen to see how he would compare with Hendrix.

Pete Sears (keyboards, Sam Gopal's Dream) : The place was full of record company people... for certain pharmaceutical reasons, we were completely out in the ozone that night, playing very weird stuff. Hendrix got up and jammed with us.

Sam Gopal : In the break, I noticed that Jimi was there, and we nodded to each other as usual. In the second set, Mick (Hutchinson, guitar) was on my left and Pete (Sears, keyboard) on my right, and I was on a platform about three feet above ground, seated in a lotus position.

Pete Sears : At some point in the set, I looked up from the organ, and there was Jimi Hendrix plugging in a guitar he'd somehow acquired.

Sam Gopal : I thought Jimi must be stoned out of his mind, because the guitar was strung for a right-handed player, but he just turned it over and played it without re-tuning or re-stringing. I started up a rhythm pattern on the tablas, and he picked up on it. For a while he was using the mike stand as a slide, and he was devastating.

Pete Sears : The whole show was recorded on a reel-to-reel in The Speakeasy bar but, unfortunately, nobody knows what happened to the tape.
