Caryl Chessman is executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin Prison, San Quentin, California, USA, for rape kidnapping and robbery. A phone call advising of a stay of execution arrives too late to save Chessman's life. Chessman's story inspired the 1960 song The Ballad Of Caryl Chessman by Ronnie Hawkins, which was released two months before the execution.
