Fact #147353

When:

Short story:

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. B.B. King and Taj Mahal are playing the first of three nights at The Fillmore East, New York City, USA.

Full article:

Keith Altham (music publicist) : When Mayall used to go on tour they always took a female roadie with them because John was a transvestite. So when they went through customs, if they found women’s clothing in his luggage he could say, ‘Oh, that’s hers.’ It didn’t quite go with the hairy beard and the cowboy hat.

He would take a twinset and pearls. It led to some interesting band meetings with all these old grizzled black blues guys, they’d turn up to find Mayall there in his latest twin set.

One of their managers, John Gunnell, I think it was, told me that they called a band meeting specifically for this purpose, because they’d never seen him dressed up. They had the meeting and nobody said a word. Then they all filed out and John Gunnell said, ‘Well, that was a disappointment, no reaction at all.’

Then they realised they were paying these guys the first good money they’d ever had in their lives and they weren’t gonna blow it.
