Ready as I was to hate this (because Kanye annoyingly combines rap, cynical political posturing and constant namechecks on family-friendly tv shows) I can’t deny its boundary-breaking brilliance. Having lately lost his mother and split from his fiancé, West says this is ‘theraputic’ music. It’s certainly a staggering change of style, featuring some of the finest, most elegant, eloquent, electronic pop I’ve ever heard. Cuts like Say You Will, Paranoid and Robocop perfectly blend Kraftwerkian chill with smoochy modern r’n’b. The lyrics are drivel but, hey, you can’t have everything.
