Fact #140615

When:

Short story:

A man is shot in the stomach after a canister of CS gas is thrown into the crowd during a Shabba Ranks gig in Brixton Academy, London, England, UK, Europe. Support act is Shinehead.

Full article:

Cate Nisbet (production editor of UK rock paper Sounds) : I arrived there quite late and found a large crowd waiting outside the Academy. I didn’t know whether they were waiting for tickets or what. Suddenly the crowd surged forward through the doors and into the Academy. I then walked in without the guest list being checked or a ticket. It was packed and there was teargas everywhere.

The MC was trying to calm everything down, then Shinehead came on. The next thing we knew, there were gunshots from the right of the stage and the crowd rushed back. I didn’t see any bodies and, after Shinehead left the stage, things calmed down. Richie Stevens played, then Shabba Ranks, but it was a very short set and finished early.

William Higham (press officer, Epic Records) : I talked to the police outside the gig, and they told me that two people had been shot and one had been stabbed.
