Fact #140118

When:

Short story:

The Phun City Festival is held in woods near Worthing, Sussex, UK.

Full article:

Nigel Fountain (audience) : The police arrived to supplement the Hell's Angels security operation. The Drugs Squad attempted to move anonymously amongst the bedraggled crowds.

Drug dealers became generous in adversity. 'John the Bog' -so named because he usually ran a stall in Middle Earth's lavatories -sold dope until he had covered his costs. Then he gave it away.

Hunger stalked the woods. The Hell's Angels 'liberated' the wretched official caterers' supplies. A people's food stall was established.

Across the churned earth the message crackled from the PA system. Free food was available. As one, the audience sprang to its feet and ran towards the stall.

Mick Farren (organiser) : To a lot of us, Phun City and Glastonbury Fayre a year later, were glimpses of the future. Glimpses of a community sharing possessions, living with the environment, maintaining their culture with whatever is naturally available, consuming their needs and little else. It was a powerful vision.
