Full article:

Rob Hallett (booking agent) : Duran Duran sent me a cassette tape, which I liked. It had songs like Planet Earth, Faster Than Light, I was sitting in my office one Friday evening and I got a phone call from the Marquee Club to say that The Associates had pulled out of their gig on the next Sunday and did I have anything that could stand in. I said, 'Well, there’s this group from Birmingham that I really like their demo tape. I’ve never seen them live but…" So The Marquee agreed to have them, and that was their first gig at The Marquee.

As it turned out, I had a bit of a late night on the Saturday, so I never got along to the gig on the Sunday. They called up on the Monday to ask what I’d thought of the gig. They said, 'We didn’t see you there.' I said, 'I’m so sorry, I couldn’t make it … but I’ve got Pauline Murray and John Cooper Clarke playing at The Lyceum in a few days, do you wanna do that? I’ll definitely be there.' So, they said, 'Yes.' They opened, and I met them and, erm, the rest is history.
