Fact #132949
When:
Short story:
See My Friend by The Kinks enters the UK singles chart where it will peak at No10. It is considered by some experts to heave been the first Western rock song to integrate Indian raga sounds. It will also directly inspire The Who's song The Good's Gone, recorded later in the year.
Full article:
Shel Talmy (producer, See My Friend) : Early on, I had recorded a duo called Jon and Alan, and Jon became Jon Mark of the Mark-Almond Band… Jon was the first guy that ever brought Indian music to my attention, and in fact wrote a song that was sort of based on a drone, a folkish type song, that I recorded with him. I played that to Ray Davies, who was so enamored with it that he went out and wrote See My Friend.
Pete Townshend (The Who) : See My Friend was The Next Time I pricked up my ears and thought, 'God, he's done it again. He's invented something new.' That was the first reasonable use of the drone - far, far better than anything The Beatles did and far, far easier. … On our first album there's a couple of songs that were directly influenced by that song: The Good's Gone, for example.
