Fact #130795

When:

Short story:

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys oversees recording of instrumental tracks for Sloop John B, at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Full article:

Al Jardine [The Beach Boys] : We were working on some other material at the time and I said to Brian, 'Hey, I know you're not into folk music, but I think you should hear this song, because if we put our own arrangement on it, our own style, I think it will be really successful.' I played it to him in the key of E and put in a little minor change which I thought sounded interesting and gave him my charts, but Brian just looked blankly at me, as if to say, 'Well, so what?' So we went back to other stuff we were doing.

About 24 hours later, I got a phone call asking me to show up at Western. I was just expecting to do the work in progress, but Brian had already completed my idea for Sloop John B and framed it in The Beach Boys style.

Not only that, the backing track was already recorded, which was miraculous when you consider the production. So my idea must have made an impact on him. All we had to do was show up and sing.

I'm sure that if Brian hadn't been working so fast, we might've sat down together and structured something whereby I could have sung (lead vocal on) the song. But he was on such a creative roll, like a sponge, absorbing every little influence and idea. It didn't matter where an idea came from, he still owned it.
