Fact #126068
When:
Short story:
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, featuring Eric Clapton, play at The Flamingo Club, Soho, London, England, UK.
Full article:
John Mayall : I had first met Eric Clapton when he was playing with The Yardbirds, so we weren't total strangers. Eric had left The Yardbirds basically because, as a band, they couldn't really play the blues, and that's what he wanted to do.
He didn't come to me for the job. I had to go out and find him. At that time he didn't have that much get up and go, so I set out to dig him out as quickly as possible.
Roger Dean had always been a solid guitar player, but Eric really had a familiarity with the blues, and that presented a golden opportunity. It did really change the way we worked as a band, in that it became a lot more open. It let us stretch out, and once we had got our second deal with Decca and did the Blues Breakers album with Mike Vernon, we were on our way ,really. (Rock CD magazine, Feb 1993)
John Mayall : Eric was always a restless musician and, having grown dissatisfied with The Yardbirds, he joined me and played an endless succession of one-nighters.
