John Steel [The Animals] : As soon as Dave Rowberry's name came up, we all agreed that he was the obvious guy. He wasn't from Newcastle but he had been a student in Newcastle and he was around on the jazz and blues scene at the same time as our old band, the Kansas City Five. He was playing with the Mike Cotton Sound by 1965, but while we were still in Scandanavia we got Mike to get in touch with him and sound him out. Soon as we got back, Dave left Mike Cotton and joined us. He was a better musician than Alan in some ways. Technically he knew more. He was a more schooled player. Alan was a seat of the pants player. He could play boogie and rock but he wasn't too good on more complicated changes. We certainly didn't suffer from Alan leaving. Dave slotted right in and we carried on almost as though nothing had happened.
