Pete Townshend : We made our first album in, I think, six hours. Shel's attitude was, 'You're just a load of punks and I made you; you should be happy you've got where you have because if it wasn't for me you'd be nowhere.'

On the first album we had (pianist) Nicky Hopkins in there with us. There's something about recording that diminishes the power of a three-man group and you have to have the extra harmonic element.
