Bill Downs (manager) : I met John Taylor who was rehearsing with this group on a song called The Boy From New York City. The next week I took them into Variety Recording Studios, where we did a demo. I signed the group up for management and took them up to Red Bird/Blue Cat. They wanted to call them The Cheerios after the breakfast cereal, but I wanted to call them the Ad Libs, after this famous New York nightspot.
