Full article:

Marshall Chess [Chess Records] : In England we had a deal with Pye through London/Decca Records. I was introduced Louie Benjamin. It was my first contract I negotiated alone. He convinced me that if I would take less money, we would put the Chess catalogue on Marble Arch, their discount label, and he had these vans that would take product into shops. They were the first distributor in the U.K. that would deliver to the mama and papa stores. And we made a handshake but I realized I just made a deal we would only break even on. 'Fuck!" And Louie said he wouldn't hold me to it. No, and it was my father speaking within me, 'Let this be a lesson and live up to the deal.' I brought Fontella Bass to Ready, Steady Go, the TV show.

Joe Brown : When rock'n'roll come over, a lot of the guys was into Elvis, that's who Cliff and Marty and everybody wanted to be like, but for me it was always Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis, guys like that. I was more into Elvis's band than into Elvis himself. I loved Scotty Moore and DJ and all those guys, Bill Black, The Jordanaires.

I'd have loved to have been a guitar hero but that didn't exist yet. I'd be playing my solos but the girls would be screaming for the singer, and I never understood that. I became what my manager Larry Parnes always said he wanted – an all-round entertainer.
