Fact #119945

When:

Short story:

The Festival Of The Flower Children, a three-day event, begins at Woburn Abbey in the UK, featuring The Small Faces, The Move, Eric Burdon, The Jeff Beck Group (with Rod Stewart on vocals), and deejays Jeff Dexter and John Peel.

Full article:

Jeff Dexter (deejay) : It was run by Tiles nightclub in London, UK. They thought they could do a better festival than The Marquee, but it bankrupted them.

Norrie Drummond (NME) : Thousands of strangely attired 'beautiful people' prancing around with flowers in their hair, beads round their necks and sticks of incense stuck between their teeth was hardly the thing you'd expect at one of Britain's most famous stately homes.

Jeff Dexter : Everyone taking part was given a new hippy name by the organisers … Tommy 'Tom Tom' Vance and Pete 'Flower Drum' Drummond. I remember Jeff Beck being very uptight, because he never liked hippies, but I danced naked with John Peel.

Norrie Drummond : Getting in was quite an achievement. You had to pass through three or four checkpoints guarded by youths with Walkie-talkies, and men wearing what looked like Gestapo uniforms, wandering around with Alsations.

Jeff Dexter : It was unusual then to have to pay for a festival, and having security was almost unheard of.

Norrie Drummond : The musical highlight was The Small Faces. Steve Marriott dressed in a highly-coloured nightgown, belting out all their hits.

Jeff Dexter : The most exciting moment was when someone threw a firework during Tomorrow's set, and the stage went on fire. We had to get the band off double quick.
