Fact #118331

When:

Short story:

Jimi Hendrix is in Electric Lady Studios, New York City, USA, recording Dolly Dagger, Beginning and Pali Gap

Full article:

Eddie Kramer (engineer) : Hendrix cut Dolly Dagger twice. He had recorded a rough demo at the Record Plant but that was scrapped entirely. We cut the new basic track in one evening, but spent three or four days overdubbing guitars and finishing the background vocals.

When we were cutting the basic track, Jimi put on a lead vocal at the same time he was recording his lead guitar to get into the mood of the vocal. Devon was in the control room at the time, and you can hear him sing, ‘Watch out Devon, give me a little bit of that heaven.’ It was a tribute to her, and a nice touch.

Jim Marron (President, Electric Lady): Devon was just as cunning as Michael Jeffery. She was intensely into anything that she perceived as being good for Jimi. Jeffery would not take any shit from her but, at the same time, she used to try and see just how far she could push him.

Dave Palmer (engineer) : She wanted to be there all the time, saying once, ‘If you’re going to be making music or mixing music with Jimi, I’ve got to be there.’ That was weird - a necessary evil for Hendrix, I guess.

Billy Cox (bassist) : If his old lady had pissed him off, things weren’t going to be too good. If you were around Jimi, you could tell when something was bothering him. We would try to do something to take his mind off his situation. Mitch or I would crack a joke or do something silly, while Eddie would try to divert Jimi’s attention into the music.
