Fact #118308

When:

Short story:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience play at The Fillmore East, New York City, USA, supported by Sly Stone.

Full article:

Al DeMarino (agent, William Morris Agency) : In the early days of the Fillmore East, the norm was a three-act bill. I had Sly and The Family Stone come into the Fillmore East as the only other act but the headliner. There was no opening act. We had one hundred percent special guest star billing below the great Jimi Hendrix Experience.

It was four shows that were spoken of for countless months afterwards because Sly drove that audience insane. He was working the Hammond B-3 organ in those days, stage centre, and midway through that show, that audience was absolutely insane.

Of course, much of that audience was there to see Hendrix. Jimi was the headliner, but Sly marched the audience out on a couple of those shows, literally, marched a good part of that audience out from the audience and into the streets. There had to be a lengthy intermission to bring that crowd down.

Paul Stanley (guitarist, Kiss) : I grew up going to Fillmore East, seeing Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie. Hendrix was like somebody from another planet. God bless Stevie Ray Vaughn, but there wouldn’t be a SRV without a Hendrix. And Hendrix was, it was so deep because it was so original, it crossed so many boundaries. There were no racial implications to what he was doing. He was just Jimi Hendrix. So he was very very dynamic and made a huge impression on me. I saw him twice. I was lucky because in New York I could see people play for 2000 people or less.
