Fact #118125

When:

Short story:

Status Quo reach No1 in the UK singles chart with Down Down.

Full article:

Francis Rossi (Status Quo) : I was sitting in a hotel room in Los Angeles trying to finish the song. I’d got most of the melody written back in England with Bob Young who I was working with at the time. We’d got most of the verse lyrics done and, looking back, it was probably about my relationship at the time.

We were stuck for a chorus, but felt that it had to have a kind of ‘De-de-de’ feel to it, like in T-Rex’s song Deborah. We needed something with that kind of push to it. We sat around for a couple of days, came up with nothing and ended up, out of desperation, resorting to ‘Down down’, which meant nothing but suited the melody.
