Phil Myatt (manager, Mothers) : Elton John was one of the last acts to perform at Mothers. At the time he didn’t like playing in public too much and he insisted on us providing him with a baby grand piano for his performance. I contacted the BBC, the Musicians’ Union and everyone else I could think of in Birmingham but could not obtain one. Eventually I got an upright one and managed to get it up the stairs and into the club. Obviously I didn’t tell Elton that we couldn’t get him the baby grand before he went on stage. He did a beautiful gig but after the performance he gave me a right mouthful.
