Jon Anderson (vocalist/songwriter, Yes) : With Close To The Edge, I knew exactly what was wanted and where we had to go. It had to be something that didn’t really end – just faded away.
It had to be something substantial and not just an album that had three songs on this side and four on the other.
Because I’m not an instrumentalist, I can think about other things and I can get ideas on production. At one point, I spent a really long time using the Revox, just with guitar, bass and drums. Out of hat came things like Siberian Khatru and And You And I.
We found ourselves doing one piece of music that was 20 minutes long. Chris wasn’t into it. Steve was aware of all the possibilities. Bill was interested, though not fully, while Rick got involved every minute.
Rick Wakeman (keyboards, Yes) : It takes a hell of a time to understand the album fully. In fact, it took me a long time to understand.
Jon Anderson : By the halfway mark everyone realized what was going on, and steamed ahead to the very end.
