Pete Fornatale (New York City deejay) : Very quickly, two concerts were organized - an afternoon show and an evening show - by George and Ravi Shankar. He invited his friends, and of course that's an A-list. Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr and Leon Russell.

Eric Clapton : I was laid up sick for a week while all the rehearsals were going on, you see. Everyone got there a week early for the gig and I got very ill and couldn't move, I was literally in a very bad way. So I missed all the rehearsals, I just got there in time for the first show. So, I mean, just being in tune was enough of a problem for me. I really felt they were carrying my weight, in a way.

Pete Fornatale : And there were rumours that day about a Beatles reunion. That's what most of the afternoon crowd was thinking about.

And instead, midway through the show, this denim-clad figure comes off from the side of the stage, with bushy hair, and it's Bob Dylan. And that was a thrill, because he hadn't been performing for a while, and it was just one of those magic moments.

Paul McCartney : If I’d gone there, I know for certain it would have been played up as, ‘Hey! The Beatles are back together again.’ It may have only been for one night but the whole world would have taken it as the truth. But it’s ended. The Beatles have definitely ended. Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) : George was more responsible than any other artist for initiating pop music's movement to aid people and countries stricken by war and calamities. His 'Concert For Bangladesh' was the first of its kind.
