Robert Smith (The Cure) : When we were playing pubs in '76 through the summer of '77, we had some songs that were kind of in a punk style - pretty thrashy. Luckily, they were abysmal. I say luckily because if I had written some really good punk songs we would have turned into a punk band and that would have been the end of the story. Michael Dempsey didn't like anything to do with punk. He was more of an XTC man, which was a little too quirky for me.
