Venetta Fields (backing vocalist) : It was the first and only time I worked with Stephen. Stephen just led us through the choruses to tell us what he wanted. He came out with a guitar to show us the chords. It took an hour and 15 minutes. It really shouldn’t take you more than an hour and a half to do one song. Any slower than that and you’re fired.
Usually you see the other singers only when the producer wants more than three singers. We were so excited because Stephen needed about eight or ten. It was a very jolly session because we all hadn’t seen each other for some time. It was an unusual session because that’s where I met Rita Coolidge.
My sessions were very easy because I didn’t have to read music and watch my diction or tone. We knew the chords and the structure behind gospel. I was just bending notes.
He was happy to do something on his own. Just to create something like this and to have the things that he wanted. Putting a choir together was really exciting for him.
