Fact #111976

When:

Short story:

John Lennon and George Harrison of The Beatles hurriedly leave Rishikesh, India, Asia, where they have been staying on an ashram at the invitation of spiritual guru the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Their departure is caused by the pair being advised that the Maharishi is using his position to obtain sexual favours from female guests. Lennon's song Sexy Sadie will be inspired by this situation.

John Lennon : There was this big hullabaloo about him (the Maharishi) trying to rape Mia Farrow or somebody and trying to get off with a few other women and things like that. We went to see him after we stayed up all night discussing was it true or not true. When George started thinking it might be true, I thought, 'Well, it must be true.' Because if George started thinking it might be true, there must be something in it.

Geoff Emerick (recording engineer, Abbey Road) : After India, they came back different…people we hardly knew. Dressed differently, they acted differently. Niggling at me. They weren’t the same people, and it wasn’t a change for the better.
