The Rock Island And La Salle Railroad Company opens its line to Rock Island, Illinois, USA. Running between Rock Island and LaSalle, Illinois, then linking through to New Orleans, it will become popularly known as The Rock Island Line and will inspire the folk/blues song Rock Island Line, first recorded by music archivist John Lomax in 1934 as sung by inmates in an Arkansas State Prison, and later popularized by Lead Belly.
