Fact #109324

When:

Short story:

Tom Jones meets his future wife, Linda, while she is playing with marbles on the street in Pontypridd, Wales.

Full article:

Tom Jones : Linda was 10 and I was a year older. She lived in the same sort of terraced house I lived in, two streets away in Pontypridd, Glamorgan. It wasn't a very beautiful place, but Linda looked pretty enough playing marbles on the pavement.

I was out doing the Penny for the Guy bit, collecting for bonfire night, when I walked past her. She had fair hair and was wearing a pretty blue dress. I saw her regularly after that because, although she had been going to one primary school while I went to another, we both ended up at the same secondary modern school.

About the time I first met Linda we used to cut down clothes lines. The clothes all fell in the mud and we were chased by housewives. If we went out in the country we used to pinch apples and then we were chased by angry farmers with dogs. One or two stories in newspapers about my violent, tearaway youth have been exaggerated but, as I grew older, my temper didn't seem to improve and there were fights.
