When:

Short story:

Two years after the song was recorded, Bobby Vinton enters the Billboard Top Forty singles chart in the USA, on the way to his fourth No1, with Mr. Lonely.

Full article:

Bobby Vinton : Epic did not believe in me. They said, 'He's really a bandleader and musician. Roses Are Red is a freak single and he's going to be a one-shot artist.' But I didn't know that they thought this at the time.

I was in my automobile and on comes Mr. Lonely. It was my song and my arrangement, but my voice wasn't there. They had taken off my voice and put on Buddy Greco's.

Buddy Greco : Bobby Vinton recorded it and we were with the same company, and the A + R man suggested that I did it. It wasn't my kind of song, as I am more jazz-oriented than that, but it was a very good song.

Bobby Vinton : So I called the record company and said, 'What has happened here?'

They said, 'We're pushing Buddy Greco.' And I said, 'I can't believe this, I've just sold three million records for you, your first million-seller, so how could you do this to me?'

They said, 'Well, you can write other songs.' They gave me some more excuses so I overlooked it and, eleven hits later, I had the Greatest Hits album due, which would contain 12 titles.

I said, 'Mr. Lonely should have been a hit for me, so I want to put it on the album.' When the radio stations got copies of the album, they immediately found Mr. Lonely and started playing it. It was released as a single and it became a No1 record over two years after it had been written and recorded.
