Fact #107063

When:

Short story:

When The Dave Clark Five sing Glad All Over on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City, USA, their host points out that, unlike The Rolling Stones, they are 'nice, neat boys.'

Full article:

Ed Sullivan : The Dave Clark Five are nice fellows. They are gentlemen and they perform well.

Rick Huxley (bassist, Dave Clark Five) : We were young and we took anything in our stride. We used to go and do it at weekends. We used to go on Friday and come back Monday. It was a true variety show, with jugglers and dog acts. We had done a summer season in Blackpool and I didn't think we fitted in there, stuck in the middle after a juggler. Ed Sullivan was part of the entertainment cycle and they tried to fit you in to keep the ratings up. They used to recruit a bunch of kids who would scream and go crazy - a normal invited audience of a higher age group would sit there and go, 'Hmm, very nice, The Dave Clark Five,' and clap politely. We got used to doing what we were scheduled to do, we had quite ordinary family backgrounds. It was quite stressful, but we took it with a pinch of salt. You didn't collapse and go, 'Ed Sullivan, I'm not worthy.'

Dave Clark : If Ed didn't like you, he'd pay you off. If he did, he'd put you up on the bill. We started off second from bottom and ended up second from top.

Rick Huxley : They called him Stoneface. He was a powerful man. With hindsight, if your face didn't fit on the Ed Sullivan Show, you'd blown it. Perhaps we were a bit more lucky than most. The Ed Sullivan Show was a little bit spooky. It was almost like they wheeled Ed on, he didn't really mix that much. There were battleship grey walls in the dressing room, a bit Spartan. You went on, it was recorded, and off you went, back to your hotel.
