Pete Quaife (bassist, The Kinks] : After we'd made a couple of records, Wace and Collins (managers of The Kinks] started suggesting that maybe we should smarten up on stage, because we were just wearing whatever. Everybody in those days was pointing at The Beatles. "Look what they're wearing. They're wearing nice clean-cut suits." Oh, really?

So everybody got into a big conflab about what we should wear and came up with those outfits. By this point things were starting to move for us, Larry Page was floating around, Arthur Howes was our agent, and everybody was pushing hard to get us across. So the gear came in just at the time of You Really Got Me.

It gave us a definite edge. It was quite distinctive. The suits were nice and we were ugly. It didn't do us any harm at all. It was probably one of the best things we ever did. They were specially made for us. That was the first time I encountered the phrase 'Which side do you dress, sir?'
