Fact #104568

When:

Short story:

Marianne Faithfull enters the UK singles chart with As Tears Go By, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.

Full article:

Keith Richards : After our first album, (manager) Andrew (Oldham) said, "We've got to find somebody to write songs and then lock them up and keep them to ourselves or else whaddaya gonna do? Just some more cover versions? You can do it for another album or two, but without a source of new material, you can't make it." I said, "That's not my job."

So what he did was lock us up in the kitchen for a night and say, "Don't come out without a song." We sat around and came up with As Tears Go By.

Mick Jagger : We had a successful crap ballad, As Tears Go By which, I can say now, it's a wonderful tune, but we didn't think it was that great at the time.

Keith Richards : It was unlike most Rolling Stones material, but that's what happens when you write songs; you immediately fly to some other realm. The weird thing is that Andrew found Marianne Faithfull at the same time, bunged it to her and it was a fucking hit for her - we were songwriters already! But it took the rest of that year to dare to write anything for the Stones.

Mick Jagger : We were these two rebellious band members and we would write nice little tunes, but sentimental stuff. Eventually we got to grips with writing rock tunes, but it took a little time.
