Prominent music critic Maureen Cleave of The London Evening Standard headlines her end-of-year feature 'The Year Pop Went Flat', bewailing everything from the rise of unintelligible, supposedly deep, lyrics, to the return of all-round entertainers such as The Seekers and Val Doonican in the pop charts. She particularly objected to pop stars who "floated around loving people in a patronising manner that was even more infuriating than their protest songs".
