Fact #102665

When:

Short story:

As Love Me Do by The Beatles hits No1 in the USA, fifties rocker Carl Perkins is invited to a party in London, UK.

Full article:

Carl Perkins : I went over to England for the first time I'd ever been, with Chuck Berry ... It was a massive tour and I was in total shock ... the last night of that tour, the promoter said, Carl, I want to take you to a party.' I said, 'Man, I'm tired. I'm going back to America in the morning.' And I did have a nine o'clock flight. I said, 'I'm going to have to cancel out on you. I can't. I'm too tired to go.' He said, 'I really think you ought to go to this one.' So I did.

It turned out that The Beatles gave the party for me. We wound up - John, Paul, George and Ringo sitting on a couch, and me sitting on a floor with a guitar. And they wanted to know how I kicked off some of them old Sun songs. That night, they invited me to a recording session at Abbey Road for the next night. I almost said that I was going home.

They asked me, 'What are you doing tomorrow night?' And maybe one of the best words I ever said was, 'Nothing.' They said, 'Well, great. Could you come to a session?' And I said, 'Yeah!'
