Fact #101857

When:

Short story:

Deep Purple, with recently-joined singer Ian Gillan, record a new single, Hallelujah, at De Lane Lea Studios, Kingsway, London, UK.

Full article:

Roger Glover (Episode Six/Deep Purple) : Ian (Gillan) accepted an invitation to join and, of course, there were terrible scenes with Gloria Bristow and the band. Then Ian called me and suggested that I help him write some songs for Purple. So I said 'Yes.' I mean, we were so broke, it was pathetic. The first time Deep Purple saw me, they reckoned I looked like a tramp - string holding my threadbare jeans up, tattered sneakers - I was a real mess.

Anyway, I went to Jon Lord's flat and we played him our songs. He didn't like them but asked if I wanted to do a session that evening. Of course, I said, 'Yes', because I knew it meant money.

I did the session and made a few constructive suggestions, and then to my astonishment, they offered me the gig as a bass-player. I turned it down ... which they could not believe! I was just being loyal to Episode Six because I knew they'd be finished if I left too.. But then i thought about it, realised that Episode Six was on its last legs anyway, and decided to look after myself for a change. So I called back and took the job.

Gloria sued both of us ad we had to borrow several thousand pounds to pay her and the band off. The case was eventually settled out of court.
