We were three friends playing, having fun, just trying to get our buddy out of a jam.
Billy Cox : We had two shows New Years Eve, and two shows New Years Day. We didn't know what to expect from the audience and the audience didn't know what to expect from us, but from the time we hit that first note, they were in awe. You had Jimi Hendrix, a drummer who had been with the Electric Flag and Wilson Pickett, and I was the new kid on the block.
Alan Arkush (staff, Fillmore East] : This guy came to the stage entrance and said, 'I got a package for Jimi.' The word was that nobody came backstage to see Jimi. I mean, no-one could give him anything. But this guy begged and begged. So I said, 'Well, I can'
t let you backstage. But I can give it to him, if you want.'
I brought it back and Jimi opened the box and it was full of cocaine. The cocaine was glistening. It had sparkles on it. Jimi did some of it and passed it on
