JOHN AND ERIC GO TO CANADA


The feature which follows is a somewhat expanded version of a feature written by Johnny Black for Mojo magazine, date uncertain)


Eric Clapton, master of the house, was still asleep, when the telegram arrived at Hurtwood Edge, Ewhurst in Surrey, just before 5.30am on September 13, 1969.


It was the gardener who opened the message, which had been sent by Terry Dolan, personal assistant to John Lennon. On reading the contents, he decided it was important enough to merit waking the boss. Minutes later, through bleary eyes, Clapton focused on Lennon's missive.


Eric Clapton : "John called me one Saturday morning and said, "Do you want to go to Toronto?" I said, "Sure. When?" And he said, "In a couple of hours." I happened to have my equipment at home, so I met them at the airport, with [bassist] Klaus Voorman and [drummer] Alan White. We all got first-class seats on the plane and I learned the repertoire on the way."


Mr Lennon was requesting the pleasure of Mr Clapton's company on an imminent jaunt to Toronto. Imminent - as in the plane was taking off from Heathrow at 10.00am. The whole thing had started just a few days before. According to Lennon, "It was late, about 11 o'clock one Friday night, I was in my office at Apple, when we got a phone call from this guy saying, 'Come to Toronto'. They really were inviting us as King and Queen to preside over the concert and not to play. But I didn't hear that part and I said, 'OK. OK. Just give me time to get a band together.' So, I thought, 'Who could I get to come and play with me?' So it all happened like
