Fact #100695

When:

Short story:

It is announced that guitarist Brian Jones has left The Rolling Stones. "I want to play my kind of music," he says, "which is no longer The Stones music."

Full article:

John Lennon : Brian Jones was different over the years as he disintegrated. He ended up the kind of guy that you dread when he would come on the phone, because you knew it was trouble. He was really in a lot of pain. In the early days he was all right, because he was young and confident.

Keith Richards (guitarist, Rolling Stones) : It did take a long time. It took from '63 to '69 for it to come about.

Mick Jagger (vocalist, Rolling Stones) : We carried Brian for quite a long time. We put up with his tirades, and his not turning up for over a year. So it wasn't like suddenly we just said, Fuck you. You didn't turn up for the show, you're out. We'd been quite patient with him. And he'd just gotten worse and worse. He just didn't want to be in it. He didn't want to be part of it. He didn't want to come out of this rather sad state.

John Lennon : He was one of them guys that disintegrated in front of you. He wasn't sort of brilliant or anything, he was just a nice guy.

Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) : I don't know what Brian would have gone on to do, quite honestly. Even though he was talking about getting a new band together and doing it all again, I don't think that that's what he would have ended up doing if he had lived. I think he might have gone into movie music, or maybe something entirely different, collecting butterflies or something. But I Don't think he was leaving the Stones just to start it all over again with some other band.

Charlie Watts (drummer, Rolling Stones) : I'm sure it nearly killed him when we sacked him 'cos he'd fought so hard to put it all together at the beginning.

Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) : The thing about Brian is that he was an extremely difficult person. You don't really feel like talking bad about someone that's had such a miserable time. But he did give everyone else an extremely miserable ride. Anyway, there was something very, very disturbed about him. He was very unhappy with life, very frustrated. He was very talented, but he had a very paranoid personality and not at all suited to be in show business.
