Fact #100470

When:

Short story:

Entrepreneur Allen Klein, against the wishes of Paul McCartney, takes over control of The Beatles' financial affairs.

Full article:

Peter Asher (A + R man, Apple Records) : Apple was collapsing, Allen Klein was coming in. I knew of him by reputation, through the Stones and other friends. I didn't like what I thought he was going to do at Apple. He was not the right man for the job. So when he came in I suggested to James (Taylor) that we leave. The contract he had was vague, like everything else at Apple. I'd heard we were going to be sued. Allen said in a Playboy interview we were sued for $50m. We were waiting to be served with something but nothing about a lawsuit ever showed up.

I've read subsequently that The Beatles had intervened with Allen, and if that's true, I'm grateful. In terms of managing him, it seemed quite logical at the time. James didn't really trust anyone else and I didn't want to stop producing him. James acquiesced to the idea, very bravely, I think.
