Lord Cardigan leads a suicidal charge of British cavalry against Russian forces at The Battle of Balaclava during The Crimean War. As a result of this futile attack, which will become known as The Charge Of The Light Brigade, 118 men are killed, 127 wounded and about 60 taken prisoner. Cardigan's reckless action will inspire the first verse of the song 5-4-3-2-1 by Manfred Mann. The 1983 song The Trooper by Iron Maiden will also be based on the same suicidal military charge, and the voice of Trumpeter Landfrey, who sounded the charge, will be used as the opening of the 1968 album Balaklava by Pearls Before Swine.
