Railroad tunnel worker John Hardy is hanged near the courthouse in Welch, McDowell County, West Virginia, USA, for the murder of another worker, Thomas Drews, over a 25 cent debt incurred in a card game. Hardy's deed will inspire the murder ballad John Hardy [not to be confused with John Henry] which will be recorded by The Carter Family, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead and many others.
