The
Bread and Roses strike, considered one of the most significant
struggles in the history of the working class in the USA, begins in
Lawrence, Massachusetts. 23,000 textile workers protested against
cuts to their wages, and they were confronted by the National
Guard, along with 22 militia companies and 50 thugs disguised as
strikers, who overturned trolley cars, smashed windows, assaulted
people and planted dynamite near the strike headquarters.
Eventually, however, the strikers won a 25-percent raise for the lowest-paid workers and smaller increases for higher-paid workers, time-and-a-quarter pay for overtime, and no discrimination against
strikers. The song Bread And Roses by
Joan
Baez and Mimi
Farina tells the story of the strike.
James Young is born in Savannah, Georgia, USA. He will find acclaim as swing jazz trombonist Trummy Young, working with Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Jimmie Lunceford and others.
