Radical Black Panther Mark Essex fatally shoots ten people with a .44-caliber Magnum rifle and wounds thirteen more at Howard Johnson's Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, before being shot dead by police officers. Essex's killing spree will inspire several songwriters to include references to him in their songs, including Loudon Wainwright III's 1973 track Clockwork Chartreuse on the album Attempted Mustache, and Japanese doom metal band Church of Misery's 2004 song Soul Discharge on their album The Second Coming.
