Inventor Thomas Edison finishes work on the first phonograph, which records sound onto a tinfoil sheet glued around a fixed cylinder. Although it does record, at this stage of its development the device is little more than a novelty.
Thomas Edison makes the first public demonstration of sound recording at his laboratory in Menlo Park, California. He recites 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' into a large horn which transmits vibrations to a needle which transfers a recording of his voice onto a cylinder rotated by hand.
