The first Stage Door Canteen is opened in New York City, USA, as a nightspot where GIs can enjoy premium entertainment free of charge. Run by a volunteer organization called the American Theatre Wing, the canteen offers servicemen nights of dancing, entertainment, food and nonalcoholic drinks, and even opportunities to hobnob with celebrities. By November 1945, a chain of Stage Door Canteens will have entertained and fed 11 million Allied servicemen in eight US cities and London and Paris. Entertainers including Duke Ellington and Marlene Dietrich will provide music for dancing.
